Icicles is not your average ice cream shop. It is made in a very unique way: by rolling it! Rolled ice cream, or Thai rolled ice cream, came to the United States in 2015. Ever since it hit, people have tried it and left wanting more. Every bowl is made in made right in front of your eyes. All you have to do is pick your flavor. Depending on the location, one bowl of ice cream costs $8.25 to $9.25 and it comes with unlimited toppings! Each bowl comes with seven ice cream rolls. Don't worry if it's too big for you because they can split it into two cups and share with a friend or take it home to eat on another day. Originating in San Jose in 2016, are currently thirteen locations in the Bay Area and Alberquerque. There are over 24 ice cream flavors at Icicles including 8 non-dairy flavors.
The last time I went to Icicles was before the coronavirus pandemic. It was packed with people catching up with friends, watching their ice cream be made, or looking at the menu debating which delicious flavor to get. I went to the San Mateo branch in California with my cousin Rafa. Even though we have been here countless times, we are always excited when we come here. When you walk in, there is a counter where you order and a menu board on a wall to your right. After you order you can either sit down on benches or watch your ice cream be made.
My favorite flavor there is Strawberry Fantasy. It contains their custard base, fresh strawberries, and graham crackers. It tastes like your average strawberry ice cream with a nutty, sandy twist. To top it off, I added a roasted marshmallow! Combined with the graham cracker, it tasted like a strawberry s'more. Another flavor I like to get is Gotcha Matcha. It tastes exactly Matcha green tea but in ice cream. If I'm feeling adventurous I get Teas Me which is similar to the Gotcha Matcha but it is mixed with Thai tea. Rafa got Strawberry Lemonade which is vegan and non-dairy. He likes to get it without any toppings to enjoy the mix of strawberries and lemons on its own.
Icicles's unique ice cream is tasty and delicious. If I could come here every day I would. Thai rolled ice creams are definitely worth getting.
